Vehicle ramps: what you need to know
Lifting ramps are used for lifting the vehicle or its axle during repair and service work underneath the vehicle. Unlike jacks, they can hold the vehicle without the use of jack stands. Certain types are intended for facilitating the loading of trailers.
Types of available lifting ramps
By purpose:
- Repair. These lifting ramps consist of two separate platforms, each placed under a given pair of wheels. Depending on the configuration, they allow for driving the vehicle on them completely or partially. In the former case, they allow access to the entire bottom but are more cumbersome. The latter are compact but intended to lift only one axle. Some models come with a hydraulic jack that increases the vehicle鈥檚 lifting height and tilt angle. - Loading. These consist of two platforms with hooks for attaching to the floor of the cargo compartment or trailer.
By material:
- Steel. These are inexpensive. They are sturdy but heavy. Usually, they are powder coated. They are prone to corrosion.
- Aluminium. These are more expensive. These are resistant to deformation and do not bend. They are lightweight.
Additionally, the devices vary according to length of the inclined and flat parts of the ladder, lifting height, and width.
Recommendations for using lifting ramps
- To avoid tipping over, do not use deformed or otherwise damaged devices.
- Drive the car so that the wheels are at the center of the platforms. Make sure there is enough space for this. After driving on the ramp, activate the parking brake and secure the vehicle with wheel chocks.
- Chipped paint should be treated with a rust solvent, cleaned, and repainted to prevent corrosion.
- Store the device in a dry and well-ventilated room.
