The production of Daihatsu Applause five-door hatchbacks took place between years 1989 and 1999. During this period, a generation and two restylings have been presented. The Daihatsu Applause replaced Daihatsu Charmant on the market. The cars were assembled in Japan.

In 1989, during the Geneva Motor Show the Daihatsu Applause hatchback was presented, having been constructed on Daihatsu Charade base.

A distinct characteristic of this model was the shape of its body: it had a lot of commonalities with a sedan, but was classified as a hatchback due to the rear door construction. This solution has not only assured an easy access to the trunk when loading bulky objects, but also a good aerodynamic resistance coefficient of 0.33.

All Daihatsu Applause cars had a fully independent suspension system and an ABS system.

Almost immediately after release, serious deficiencies were found in the fuel system. During refueling, the air pressure was quite excessive, which could lead to serious accidents. This led, in 1990, to the second presentation of the car, under the name of Daihatsu Applause Citer, which underlined the change.

In 1992, renewed Daihatsu Applause cars hit the market, without the 鈥淐iter鈥� attachment in the name. The car producer stopped installing carburetor engines. Also, the front and rear bumpers were slightly changed.

In 1997, another restyling took place. A new Daihatsu Applause was presented during the Frankfurt Motor Show. The front part of the car was decorated with a chromed radiator grille and new headlights. The car became 35mm longer without changing other dimensions. The developers also improved the suspension construction: front wheels received coil springs instead of shock-absorber struts; coils springs also replaced the rear double wishbone.

The updates to the Daihatsu Applause had no effect on increasing their sales, which led to stopping European market supplies in 1999, and closing production in Japan in 2000.
