Mazda 929

Production of Mazda 929, a  business class car, began in 1973 and continued until the end of 1995 at factories in Hiroshima, Japan.

Mazda 929 LA2

In autumn of 1972 in Tokyo the presentation of the model for domestic market,  Luce Rotary RX-4 with a rotor-and-piston power unit, took place. Next year production of an export variant of Mazda 929 began. The car was released in sedan, coupe and five-door station wagon bodies.

In 1976 the car got a new radiator grille and a rubber moulding on the front bumper.

Mazda 929 LA4

In 1977 the company organized production of the second generation of Mazda 929. Initially the car was produced in a sedan body, but since 1979 five-door station wagons went on sale. The car became more angular, and also got a stylish chrome rectangular radiator grille.

In 1979 the car got wide rectangular headlights without horizontal bars, and also new rectangular rear optics.

Mazda 929 HB/HV

Production of the third generation of Mazda 929 began in 1981. The car was created on the new Mazda HB platform and was released in sedan and coupe bodies. Pop-up headlights were a distinctive feature of the coupe. Production of cars in a five-door station wagon body on the modified Mazda HV platform began in 1983.

In 1984 the producer added new decorative finishing of the exterior. Also the shape of windows of Mazda 929 HB in the coupe body was partially changed so the glass area was increased and visibility was improved.

Mazda 929 HC

In 1987 the company organized production of Mazda 929 HC. Cars of the fourth generation in a body of a five-door station wagon were not produced. Some of the cars were equipped with a folding rigid roof. The car was produced till 1991, but release of limited series for needs of the Japanese taxi service continued for five more years.

Mazda 929 HD

In 1991 production of the fifth generation of Mazda 929 began. The car was created on the new Mazda HD platform and was released in a sedan body.

In a basic package the car was equipped with anti-lock braking system (ABS), power windows and a central lock. Cruise control and roof hatch were offered as additional options.

Production of Mazda 929 HD continued until the end of 1995.

Mazda 929 HE

In 1996 the company began to produce the sixth generation of the car at the plant in Australia. The car was developed on the new Mazda HE platform. Because of weak demand, the car was manufactured  for about a year, then production of the model was completely stopped.

Mazda 929 in the markets of the different countries

In domestic market of Japan, cars were called Mazda Luce, Mazda Cosmo, Mazda Sentia, Luce Rotary RX-4 and 蓻fini MS-9. Also some generations of the model were on sale under the name KIA Potentia.
