In 1988 production of Mercedes-Benz SL Class R129 began. Designers left large rectangular headlights, but smoothed outlines of the body. Because of this change the new car began to look stylishly and elegantly. The car was released only in a roadster body. Also developers released the limited number of Mercedes-Benz SL Class R129 AMG modifications. They differed in the increased power and speed.

Sales of Mercedes-Benz SL Class R230 started in 2001. The new car resembled a car of the first generations in many respects: rectangular headlights were replaced by oval optics again; the hood became more relief, the radiator grille was enlarged. Designers made a body more streamline. Also the model had a folding roof like Vario Roof.

During restyling of 2006, the car got the chrome plated fringing of fog lights, stylish back optics, qualitative materials of inner trimming, the numerous chrome plated elements. The brake system and a steering were improved.

In 2008 developers carried out the second restyling of Mercedes-Benz SL Class R230. The body had more streamline shapes. The greatest changes concerned a front bumper: headlights, cover of the hood, radiator grille. Besides, the system of roof opening changed a little.

At the North American automobile festival in 2011 Mercedes-Benz SL Class R231 was presented. The car body was made of aluminum that allowed to reduce weight of the car and to increase its controllability and power a little.

Developers enlarged front headlights and changed the shape of back ones completely. Besides, the car had the improved Magic Vision monitoring system, anti-lock braking system and electronic stability control system. Also designers installed an electromechanical regulating Drive-Start system, Parking Assist and Distance Control Assist.
