Model I generation
The Mitsubishi Celeste model was constructed on the basis of Mitsubishi Lancer A70 released in a two-door and four-door sedan and the station wagon bodies. Mitsubishi Celeste cars were produced in a three-door hatchback body. The car succeeded the Mitsubishi Galant FTO model which was not in great demand because of high cost.
Hatchbacks of Mitsubishi Celeste had the same wheelbase of 2.340 mm as Mitsubishi Lancer sedans had. Length of the body of Mitsubishi Celeste reached 4 115 mm. Round headlights and rear-view mirrors located on the hood were distinctive features of design of the exterior of the car.
Model I generation restylings
In July, 1977, there was a restyling of Mitsubishi Celeste hatchback. External changes affected back optics. Also there were modifications with new engines. Advanced package of the Mitsubishi Celeste GT System 80 model debuted in November, 1977. The body of the car was painted in black and gold colours.
Next time the car was subjected to updates in April, 1978. Headlights got square shape. The front bumper was modernized. The production of Mitsubishi Celeste was terminated in July, 1981, having given way to the Mitsubishi Cordia model.
Mitsubishi Celeste in the markets of different countries
The model was presented to motorists under the name Mitsubishi Lancer Celeste, however in the markets of different countries it had different names. In Australia these cars were called Chrysler Lancer Hatchback, in El Salvador Dodge Lancer Celeste, in the USA Plymouth Arrow, in Canada Dodge Arrow. In some markets cars carried the name Colt Celeste.
In 1979-1980 Plymouth Fire Arrow cars were released for the American market. Their main feature consisted in the increased engine displacement.
