Model 19681999
Production of the first generation of cars was organized in 1968-1971. Mitsubishi Delica T100 cars were released in a two-door dropside truck and the minibus bodies. The weight of maximum pay-load of the car was 600 kg, and the maximum speed 115 km/h.
In March, 1971, there was a restyling of Mitsubishi Delica T100: the updated model began to be called Mitsubishi Delica 75 T120. External changes affected the radiator grille. Next time the car was upgraded in 1974 therefore received a new front bumper and pair of front lights.
In 1976 Mitsubishi Delica 75 T121 with the wheel base extended by 150 mm began to be released.
From 1979 to 1986 the second generation of Mitsubishi Delica cars was produced. Two-door pickups and three-door vans were manufactured. Changes affected both design and body exterior. Headlights got square shape instead of round. Front and back bumpers were changed. In design of the body straight lines were visible. Since 1982 the four-wheel drive system was offered as an option. Mitsubishi Delica became the first four-wheel drive minibuses in the Japanese market.
In 1986 release of the third generation of the Mitsubishi Delica model began. In comparison with the predecessor, the updated car became safer. The body received a rounded shape so the aerodynamics was improved.
After the release of the next generation, Mitsubishi Delica L300 in a van body was manufactured for foreign markets. In 1999 the exported cars were subjected to restyling. In September the car with slightly updated design of the exterior was presented in Australia.
Model IV generation
On May 12, 1994, Mitsubishi Delica minivan of the fourth generation debuted. The model had a new modern design. Cars were offered with standard and extended wheel bases (2 800 mm and 3 000 mm). Power units of the car were borrowed from the Mitsubishi Pajero model.
Model IV generation restyling
In 1996 there was a restyling of Mitsubishi Delica of the fourth generation. Changes affected the front bumper, front fenders and optics. Also the shape of the hood was changed. Production of the updated cars of the fourth generation came to the end in 2007.
Model V generation
In 2005 Mitsubishi Concept D:5 was presented at the Tokyo motor show. The Japanese premiere of the Mitsubishi Delica D:5 minivan took place on January 31, 2007. Cars are constructed on the new GS platform. The car has eight seats. Sliding side doors provide ease of boarding for passengers.
Mitsubishi Delica in the markets of the different countries
The Mitsubishi Delica model was on sale under different names: in Europe and New Zealand it was called Mitsubishi L300 (Mitsubishi L400 later), in the USA Mitsubishi Van and Mitsubishi Wagon, in Australia Mitsubishi Express and Mitsubishi Starwagon. In May, 2013 the production of Mitsubishi Express in Australia was stopped because of low level of safety: by results of ANCAP crash tests the car received one star only.
Since 1979 in the market of Japan passenger cars had the name of Mitsubishi Delica Star Wagon. In 1994 cars began to be called Mitsubishi Delica Space Gear, and in Europe Mitsubishi Space Gear.
