SEAT 600

SEAT 600 is an extremely polular Spanish car, released in 1957-1973. These cars were manufactured in Barcelona, Spain.

SEAT 600 I generation

The official premiere of the SEAT 600 cars took place at the Barcelona Motor Show in 1956. The model was the licensed copy of FIAT 600 debuting the previous year at the Motor Show in Geneva. The first serial SEAT 600 car was released in 1957.

The design of the model was developed by the famous Italian designer Dante Giacosa and had the spirit of its time: the smooth lines, round headlights, pop-out front fenders and a convex hood. The big company logo plate was covered with chrome and became the decoration of the front part of the car. The bumpers and door handles were covered with chrome also. Initially models of the first generation were produced in a two-door hatchback body, and both doors could be opened to the side, opposite to the car course. In 1958 the SEAT 600 Cabrio cabriolet was released.

The interior of the car was not really comfortable. To reduce the production cost, it was decided not to use upholstery materials in the dashboard decoration.

The cars of the first generation, known also as SEAT 600 Normal, were modernized for several times. In 1958 the lever of turn signal indicators was removed to the steering wheel column. In 1961 front screen washer was installed on these models.

Despite modest technical characteristics, imperceptible design and ascetic interior, SEAT 600 became extremely popular in Spain. Representatives of middle class could afford purchase of this inexpensive and economic car. The queue for SEAT 600 was set for four years ahead, and the number of persons interested to buy this car equaled nearly 100 000. But one need to make an advance payment at a rate of one third of the car cost to become the applicant for acquisition of the car. The release of cars of the first generation lasted till 1963.

SEAT 600 II generation

The premiere of cars of the second generation 鈥� SEAT 600 D 鈥� took place at the Barcelona Motor Show in 1963. Technical characteristics and design of the model were improved. Minor changes concerned an exterior: front turn signals were placed closer to the wheel arches. Cases of exterior mirrors were integrated into windscreen pillars, had the round form and the chromeplated covering. Aperture panels of the body were decorated with the chromeplated body side moldings. This generation of the model became the most numerous in the history of the model. In seven years of production, 418 035 copies of SEAT 600 D were released. The range of bodies still consisted of hatchbacks and cabriolets. The four-door sedan was called SEAT 800 though informally it was known as four-door SEAT 600. The release of cars of the second generation lasted till 1970.

SEAT 600 III generation

In 1969 the SEAT 600 E car came to the series production. Technical characteristics were adopted from the previous model. The main changes concerned an exterior: head and rear lights, a company logo plate and a front panel were restyled. Also the system of opening of doors was changed. The comfort level in the passenger compartment was increased.

In 1972 SEAT 600 L was released. These cars differed from other cars in the increased comfort level. The dashboard and inside of the doors were decorated by leather-like materials.

In 1973 production of SEAT 600 was stopped.
