Suzuki Jimny 19701998The history of Suzuki Jimny started in 1968, when Suzuki Motor Corporation bought the Hope Motor Company, which launched the HopeStar ON360 SUV. Starting from 1970, these cars have been sold as Suzuki. SUVs were called Suzuki LJ10. Suzuki Jimny was built based on this car. The first four-wheel drive Suzuki Jimny LJ10 SUVs had soft top and canvas curtains instead of doors and windows, were fitted with 16-inch wheels, and weighed 590 kg. Side mirrors were mounted on the front fenders. The passenger compartment of the first cars had two seats.
In May 1972, the first generation was restyled. Suzuki Jimny LJ20 got a radiator grill with vertical bars instead of the horizontal ones. The changes were mainly in the technical equipment. Optionally, the cars were equipped with two rear seats facing each other. The line-up of bodies was expanded with hard-top vans.
From 1976 until 1981, Suzuki Jimny SJ10/SJ20 was produced. Unlike its predecessor, the car had a more powerful powertrain.
1981 saw the release of the second generation of the model. Suzuki Jimny SJ30 and Suzuki Jimny SJ40 were produced as vans, station wagons and convertibles. The cars were available with standard and extended wheel bases, which reached 2,030 and 2,375 mm in length, respectively.
In 1984, the production of the updated Suzuki Jimny JA51 started. The car got a modified radiator grill, front disc and rear drum brakes. Seats ergonomics improved. The car got a new dashboard.
In January 1986, a modification of Suzuki Jimny JA71 with turbocharged engine saw its debut. The vehicles were produced as vans. Cars with panoramic roof were available.
Suzuki Jimny JBIn 1997, at the Tokyo Motor Show, the third-generation model was presented. Initially, only three-door SUVs left the assembly line. In May 1999, at the Barcelona Motor Show, a convertible with canvas top was presented.
Suzuki Jimny JB's body got rounded shape. The front part was completely redesigned. The changes had been made to the suspension, which resulted in improved handling and increased driving comfort. The basic configuration included front airbags and an immobilizer.
Suzuki Jimny JB restylingIn 2005, the first restyling of the third generation model was made. The exterior changes concerned fog lights and five-spoke wheels. New colors were made available for the body.
In 2012, Suzuki Jimny JB underwent its second restyling. Once again, the front bumper was redesigned.
