Production of Toyota Copain was carried out from 1969 to 1988 at the plants in Japan. Actually the car was the third generation of Toyota Publica renamed for export.

Production of Toyota Copain began in April, 1969. The car was produced as a two-door sedan, a two-door pickup, a three-door station wagon and a three-door van. The car differed in reasonable price and was in great demand.

Production of the model fell on years of economic growth in Japan. During this period Toyota Copain cars were available to the majority of young families. Also the model became extremely popular among youth as the first car.

Cars had stylish, but laconic design of an exterior. In the front part of the body there were round headlights, the chrome plated bumper with fog lamps, and also the wide chrome plated radiator grille. On side doors thin mouldings were located. Wheels of the car had the chrome plated caps.

Toyota Copain cars had front MacPherson suspension and the rear horizontal lamella suspension with springs. On the front wheels disk brakes were set, and on the rear ones 鈥� that of a drum type.

In 1970 the car got the improved dashboard, and also minor changes of hardware. In 1972 front and rear parts of the body were changed.

In 1973 Toyota Copain coupe went on sale. During the period from 1973 to 1976 the model was brought into accord with actual environmental standards of Europe twice.

In 1978 the production of Toyota Copain in passenger bodies was stopped. The production of commercial vehicles in a van and a pickup bodies continued till 1988.

In domestic market the car was on sale under the name Toyota Publica P30, and in other countries of the world 鈥� as Toyota 1000. In Belgium the car was called Toyota Osaka. The name Toyota Copain was received only by the cars going on sale in the territory of the majority of the countries of Europe.
