The concern created 2 special modifications of the model for sport races under the name Toyota MR2 TRD2000GT and Toyota MR2 SW20 Spider. Cars had more streamline shapes of a body and powerful engines. Models were successful in the Le Mans and Japanese Grand Touring Championship championships.

Toyota MR2 SW20 Spider became the first car in the class which could be accelerated to the speed of 320 km/h.

Completely updated Toyota MR2 model went to the stock production in 1999, but was presented in 1997 at the automobile festival inTokyo.

The car body had completely new design. Designers decided to refuse sliding headlights. Besides, designers stopped the producing of a coupe, having replaced it with a roadster. The body became made of aluminum that reduced the weight of the car and increased its controllability.

From 2002 to 2007 Toyota MR2 cars received a number of changes which concerned modifications and packages of the model. The list of extra options was expanded considerably.

Designers released new powerful modifications in 2005 under the name Toyota MR2 VM180 Zagato, Toyota MR2 TF300 and Toyota MR2 ZZW30. All of them were produced by the limited series and were available only in some markets.

In 2005 the car export to America was stopped, and in 2007 production was stopped because of the fallen sales.
