Toyota Starlet was produced from 1973 to 1999. The production of the first generation was organized at the plant in Japan, but then release of these cars was relocated to Indonesia.

At the same time 3-and 5-door hatchbacks were produced only for export, and in the Japanese market were not on sale.

The second generation of the model became the first Toyota car which began to use the mechanism of the pinion-and-rack gear. In 1980-1983 the car underwent several face liftings. As a result it received rectangular head lights, the shortened plastic bumper. Designers also created Si Limited package which had the sports spoiler, an interior stylized in black-red tones and an ignition system of Multi-point.

Toyota Starlet 70 series appeared in the market in October, 1984. It was available in seven packages. In 1985 production of the Toyota Starlet model was organized in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Start of production of the fourth generation of the Toyota Starlet has fallen on 1989. The Japanese modifications were completed with new Twincam engines. As before, the car was available in 3-and 5-door a hatchback bodies.

In Japan sports modification of Toyota Starlet Glanza became very popular. It accelerated to 100 km/h in 8,3 seconds. At the same time it was intended only for the Japanese domestic market. Some modifications were delivered to Great Britain and New Zealand in a private order.

Production of the model was stopped in 1999. The car has been forced out by newer Toyota Echo and Toyota Yaris models.

In the Asian market the model was initially positioned as Toyota Publica Starlet. Only the second generation of the model did not have the Publica prefix.

Toyota Starlet 80/90 was released in Indonesia under the name Fantastic Starlet.
