Toyota Supra is a sport car released from 1978 to 2002. Till 1986 in the name of model the Celica prefix was used. The car was manufactured at the Japanese plants of Takara and Toyota-City only.

The first generation of Toyota Supra A40 was launched in 1978. The car copied the popular Toyota Celica model in many respects and in the Japanese market was on sale under the name Toyota Celica XX. Cars intended for export bore the name Toyota Celica Supra.

The Toyota Celica XX sporty coupe was in demand in the Japanese market. The car was created in cooperation with Lotus concern 鈥� the famous British producer of racing cars.

Toyota Supra A60 was available for sale in 1981. It had elaborated body and an exterior. The car was produced in bodies of a targa and a coupe. Sliding headlights became a basic element of design.

In North America the car was released in two additional pckages under the name "Performance Type" (P-type) and "Luxury Type" (L-type). They included a special aerodynamic tuning of the car, big disks, sports seats.

For 1982-1986, the car went four face liftings. Changes concerned both an exterior and an interior of the model, and technical characteristics. Developers created a number of fashionable modifications with the strengthened engines and the suspension. Besides, they added the TPS and EGR system to all the cars.

The third generation of the model went on sale in 1986. The car was based on the updated Toyota T platform. The sports car was completely separated from Toyota Celica, having become completely independent model.

Designers have narrowed position lights and made lines of a body smoother that improved aerodynamic properties of a car. All Toyota Supra A70 cars had the ABS and TEMS systems improving maneuverability of the car even at high speeds. Also the new air conditioning system of ACIS has been built in.

Especially for races in 1988, the concern designed modification with the increased power and controllability under the name Toyota Supra Turbo-A. It performed at the Japanese Touring Car Championships.

Till 1992 designers have carried out 6 face liftings and restylings. During these changes the car began to look sportier, the interior was considerably changed and a number of additional options was added.

In the fourth generation of Toyota Supra A80 designers decided to refuse the main detail of an exterior 鈥� folding headlights. Also the design of the front part of the body was strongly changed. The car got a new bumper, the changed fenders and more rounded shapes of the hood.

Developers placed the main emphasis on increase in power and improvement of stability of engines. Cars were equipped with additional security and stabilization systems.

The unique braking system which stopped the car at the speed 113 km/h for 45 meters was installed on the car. This record has been set in 1997 by the automobile magazine "Car and Driver". Only in 2004 this record was broken.

After the restyling of 1996, Toyota Supra A80 car became a little easier. So, the mass of a car before updating made 1565 kg, and after restyling this indicator has decreased to 1500 kg.

Production of the car was stopped in 2002 because of low sales.
