Lug wrenches are used to remove the fasteners on wheels. They may have one or more heads.

Types of available wrenches for wheel nuts and bolts

By design type:

• Tube-shaped. These wrenches have one hexagonal working element. There may be a crowbar at the opposite end.
• L-shaped. These are bent at a 90 degree angle. These wrenches are often included in the toolkit supplied with the vehicle. Due to their short handle, they are not suitable for loosening rusted fasteners.

• Rotary. These wrenches come in standard and elongated variants. They may be equipped with a planetary gearbox, which facilitates loosening rusted nuts and bolts on passenger cars and twin wheels of trucks.
• Torque wrenches. These wrenches allow for the tightening of nuts and bolts with the torque specified by the vehicle manufacturer. They tend to be more expensive.

By the method the working elements are attached:

• Nonmodular. These wrenches are used for fasteners of a specific size.
• Modular. These allow attaching heads of any size.

Recommendations for using lug wrenches

1. If the vehicle has alloy or forged wheels, make sure the head fits in the fastener seats.
2. Do not exceed the recommended tightening torque.
3. Tighten the fasteners clockwise.
4. Use only heads that fit specific fasteners.
5. If the nuts or bolts are corroded, pre-lubricate them with WD-40.
