Air pressure gauge: what you need to know
Tyre pressure should be checked regularly to ensure safe and comfortable driving. Over- or under-inflated tyres can lead to uneven wear, premature failure of suspension elements, increased fuel consumption, and aquaplaning. Check pressure once a week and before every long drive using a tyre pressure gauge.
Operating principle
One end of the pressure gauge tube is connected to the valve stem of the tyre. The compressed air enters the tube, which makes it unbend and push the rod. In mechanical versions, this rod is connected with a dial scale that displays the readings. When the pressure drops, the tube returns to its initial position and the reading tends to zero. In an electronic device, there is a sensor that sends information to the control unit, which is then displayed on the screen.
Types of available tyre pressure gauges
By design type:
- Manual. These gauges may have either a rack or a pinion. The gauges with a rack are compact but fragile. Their measurement error is approximately 0.05%. The gauges with a pinion have a dial. These are offered at an affordable price. The components are waterproof but do not guarantee absolute measurement accuracy.
- Digital. Such gauges have a backlit LCD. They are highly precise. These gauges are expensive and require periodic replacement of the batteries.
Recommendations for using tyre pressure gauges
- Measure the pressure of cold tyres only. The required values are indicated in the vehicle manual. They may also be indicated on the door pillar on the driver’s side and the fuel filler flap.
- Before using the device, make sure that the vehicle is not overloaded. Otherwise, the accuracy of the readings may be affected.
- Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations when adjusting the pressure in non-standard tyres.
- Decrease the pressure in the tyres when driving off-road or on snow. Increase the pressure to the required value after returning to public roads.
- Periodically check the pressure in all wheels; it should be the same.
- Avoid forceful impacts and water damage to the device.
- Observe the polarity when replacing batteries in electronic devices.

Useful information on functions, causes of malfunction, diagnosis and replacement intervals
It's important to check tyre pressure regularly to ensure your tyres are properly inflated, which can help improve fuel efficiency, prolong the life of your tyres, and ensure proper handling and safety while driving.
A tyre pressure gauge is a tool used to measure the pressure in your tyres. There are various types of gauges available, including analogue gauges, digital gauges, and pen-style gauges.
To use a tyre pressure gauge, first remove the valve cap from your tyre's valve stem. Then, press the gauge onto the stem and hold it there until the reading stabilises. Record the reading and compare it to the recommended pressure listed in your vehicle owner's manual or on the inside of the driver's side door.
It's recommended to check your tyre pressure at least once a month, as well as before long trips or when carrying heavy loads.
Whilst TPMS systems can be useful, they're not always accurate and may not alert you to a gradual loss of pressure. It's still important to regularly check your tyre pressure with a gauge.
The recommended tyre pressure for your car can be found in your vehicle owner's manual or on the inside of the driver's side door. It's important to follow these recommendations to ensure optimal performance and safety.
Driving with underinflated or overinflated tyres can have negative consequences, including decreased fuel efficiency, increased wear and tear on your tyres, decreased handling and stability, and increased risk of a blowout or accident.
When choosing a tyre pressure gauge, consider factors such as accuracy, ease of use, and durability. Analogue gauges may be more affordable, while digital gauges may provide more precise readings. It's also important to choose a gauge that is compatible with your valve stem type (e.g. Schrader or Presta).
