The production of Peugeot 504 began in 1968 and continued to 1983. This model became one of the most successful in the French company鈥檚 history. In 1969, Peugeot 504 was proclaimed 鈥淓urope鈥檚 Car of the Year鈥�. The car also won multiple classical African rallies. The assembly of the European Peugeot 504 took place in the plants of France and Italy.

Debuting during the 1968鈥檚 Paris Motor Show, the Peugeot 504 sedan became the first car of the company that had both front and rear independent suspensions.

Initially, only sedan bodies were available. Coupe and convertible bodies were created in 1969, and presented at the Geneve Motor Show. A year later, a universal body followed by a pick-up body were added. The five-seat universal was sold under the Peugeot 504 Break name, the seven-seater - as the Peugeot 504 Familiale.

The design of the coupes and the convertibles was executed by the famous Pininfarina design studio. These cars differed from the rest of the 504 line-up by having a narrower front and flowing body lines. In the most expensive packages, leather was used for interior upholstery.

The Peugeot 504 cars were renowned for their reliability, durability and high repair capacity. Due to good maneuverability and smooth movement, these cars were used by police, armed forces, as ambulances and taxis. Besides, on Peugeot 504 Taxi, it was possible to install a 3-place sofa seat instead of the front seats, converting the passenger compartment to a 6-seat one. On those models, the transmission rod was placed on the steering wheel column.

The first Peugeot 504 restyling was conducted in 1975. A few elements of the interior and exterior were changed, the car received new door handles and a four-spokes steering wheel, new wheel discs. The front turn indicators became white. In 1979, a second restyling took place. A floor gear shift rod began to be installed, the dashboard has been renewed. Small changes touched the overall design. In particular, new bumpers were installed.

This model has been produced, in different years, outside of Europe: in Argentina until 1995, in Kenya and Nigeria until 2004 and 2005 respectively. In China, the model was assembled between 1979 and 1995. In small batches, the car was also assembled in Portugal and Uruguay.
