A large family car was produced between 1979 and 1992 under the Peugeot 505 name. The model, came to replace Peugeot 504, has received recognition and popularity across the world. At different times, production of this model was staged in Europe, South America, Africa, Australia and Asia. In 1980, the car has taken 3-rd place in the 鈥淓urope鈥檚 Car of the Year鈥� contest.

In Europe, the fist generation of Peugeot 505 was assembled at the Sochaux plant in France, from 1979 to 1985. In creating this model, Peugeot鈥檚 engineers were aiming to create a decent rival to the market鈥檚 then-leaders - Mercedes-Benz and BMW cars. In the end, Peugeot 505 was a reliable, safe, durable, qualitative and undemanding in maintenance car.

The design of this car is a continuation of the Peugeot 504 ideas and has been developed in conjunction by the famous Pininfarina studio and the Peugeot Design department. Visually, the car was very reminiscent of the 305 model - the same trapeze headlights, a slanted towards the end hood cover and an abrupt cut of the trunk. The interior was created under Paul Bracq鈥檚 guidance and came out to be quite original - brown tweed was used for upholstery.

The model ran in sedan and five-door universal bodies. The latter was introduced in 1982 at the Geneve Motor Show. In limited runs, a two-door Peugeot 505 pick-up truck was produced.

Western Europe has seen a heightened demand for diesel modifications of the Peugeot 505: these cars were used as taxis, hearses, ambulance cars, police and even army vehicles.

In 1985, Peugeot 505 underwent a restyling. The dasboard became more massive, the radiator grille was updated and rear lights were integrated into the bumper. The options list was quite impressive: a central lock, electric front- and back window raisers, powered hatch and mirrors, mirror heating, ABS and cruise-control.

In Europe, the production of Peugeot 505 was halted in 1992, but the cars continued to be assembled in Chile, Egypt and Argentina. In China, this model has been produced up until 1997 and was sold under the Guangzhou-Peugeot GP 7202 name.
