Car paint spray gun: what you need to know

Paint spray gun is used for coating the body and other car parts with paint or special protective agents. It allows to quickly and easily apply an even layer of the chemical compound onto the treated surface, without drips, stains and badly-painted areas which spoil the look of the vehicle and affect the quality of the protective coating.

What are the types of automotive paint spray guns

Tools differ in their spraying system. Each type is marked accordingly:

• HP. They are inexpensive and suitable for painting large areas. They are inferior to other device types in efficiency: only about 40% of the paint gets transferred onto the treated surface. Such devices output the air pressure of 2 atm. This allows to hold the sprayer at a rather long distance from the painted surface and to treat hard-to-reach places easily. But because part of the material bounces off, visibility in the room where you work becomes worse. Moreover, the agent settles all around the painted element.
• HVLP. Their output pressure is 0.7 atm. Due to this 75 鈥� 80% of the sprayed material ends up on the treated surface. They require much air to work and, accordingly, a powerful compressor. Due to low speed of the output airflow, it is recommended to spray the paint with such a device from the minimum distance, which creates certain difficulties when working with parts, access to which is hindered.
• LVLP. They feature the most balanced characteristics. They create pressure of about 0.8 鈥� 1.2 atm, but consume two times less air than HVLP. They transfer up to 85% of the paint. They also provide quality and even application from a long distance thus are suitable for treating hard-to-reach components.

Features of paint spray guns usage

1. Choose the nozzle diameter in accordance with the viscosity of the material used.
2. Set the output pressure as recommended by the paint spray gun manufacturer.
3. Perform a test to make sure that the device is adjusted correctly. The check is done in three steps using heavy paper or paperboard as a test surface. Start with placing the sprayer at the distance, recommended by the manufacturer, so that it is perpendicular to the paper, and press the trigger for 1 鈥� 2 seconds. The pattern should be an elongated evenly painted oval. After this, you need to turn the device horizontally and spray the paint till it starts running down. Speed of the flowing streams and the distance between them should be almost equal. Then, after turning the paint spray gun on, pass it along the test surface slowly and without changing speed. If the setting is correct, small drops will be distributed evenly over the whole painted surface.
4. Use a masking tape on the elements which shouldn鈥檛 be painted.
5. Be sure to work in a well-ventilated room, use glasses, respirator and gloves.
6. Always hold a spray gun at a specified distance to the painted part. Averagely, it is 20 鈥� 25 cm for sprayers of HP type, 10 鈥� 15 cm for HVLP, and 18 鈥� 23 cm for LVLP.
