Fiat 128Fiat 128 is a compact car released from 1969 to 1985. Cars of this model were assembled not only in Italy, but also at the plants in Argentina, Colombia and Sri Lanka. In 1970 Fiat 128 was recognized as the European car of year.
Fiat 128 I generationThe presentation of the model took place at the motor show in Turin in 1969 and was the foundation of era of front drive cars of the Italian firm. For the end of the 1960-s, Fiat 128 became the real technological breakthrough: different length of drive shafts allowed to place the engine and the transmission next to each other. For a small economic car it was an opportunity to expand free space in the passenger compartment.
The interior of the Fiat 128 was designed with emphasis rather on functionality, than on luxury: a simple and rational dashboard, decent materials of internal finishing, imitation leather upholstery of seats. Appearance of the car was designed in the style popular at that time 鈥� a chopped, angular body style had already been used in the Fiat 124 and 125 models.
Initially the model was presented only by a two-door and a four-door sedan. In 1970 the three-door station wagon appeared. At the Turin motor show in 1971 the novelty Fiat 128 sporty coupe - was shown.
Fiat 128 cars had success in Europe and sold well. Thanks to excellent qualities of a frame, lightness of a body and the front wheel drive, the model was widely represented in rally competitions. Even nowadays in historical car races Fiat 128 cars are strong rivals in category of engines with a capacity of 1,3 liters.
Fiat 128 I generation restylingsIn 1972 there was a small face lifting of the whole Fiat 128 range: cars got a new radiator grille. More extensive restyling happened in 1976: new bumpers, headlights, rectangular back lights were installed on the car, and the dashboard was changed a little too.
Fiat 128 in the markets of different countriesFiat 128 was released in Yugoslavia as Zastava 128 and Zastava 101. In Spain in 1976-1980 the SEAT 128 model was produced. In Egypt the Fiat 128 model was known as Nasr 128.
