The production of this compact car began in Betim, Brazil, in 1985 and lasted for 10 years. The model was designed for the Latin American market on the basis of the Uno model concept . Under the name Premio the car was spread in Brazil only, for other countries these cars were assembled in Argentina under the name of Fiat Duna.

Initially Fiat Premio was presented by a two-door sedan. In 1987 the three-door station wagon appeared, a year later the Premio family was enriched with a four-door sedan, at last, in the 1989 the five-door station wagon was produced at the assembly line of Betim plant.

Fiat Premio had great success at the South American continent: consumers appreciated cars of this model with low fuel consumption and capacious trunk (more than 500 liters), that was unusual for cars of this class.

In Europe (except Great Britain where this model was never delivered) the Latin American sedans of Fiat Premio were known as Fiat Duna, and station wagons got to the Old World Market under the name of Elba and Innocenti Elba.
