Fiat Ritmo is the family car of the small sizes released in 1978. It enjoyed wide popularity, being worthy and cheaper representative of the class than its competitors from Ford and Renault. In 1988 the model was laid off because of the release of Fiat Tipo. From the very beginning of sales, Fiat Ritmo won high popularity and it was naturally recognized the best car of Europe in 1979.

While designing this mode, designers relied in many respects on advantages of Fiat 128 which was released till 1984. The design of the car was developed by the Bertone studio which refused angular forms of a body therefore the new model was unusual, but very nice. At the time of the presentation (at the motor show in Turin, 1978) Fiat Ritmo cars were manufactured in two types of a body 鈥� a three-door and five-door hatchback.

Several modifications of Fiat Ritmo appeared in the market soon. In September, 1979, Targa Oro differing in richness of materials of inner trimming and a colour scheme of a body was produced. Later the Fiat Ritmo Super, more powerful and high-speed car was released. Soon the Ritmo family was extended with sporty 105TC modification , and in several months the European market (except British) was entered by the Ritmo Abarth 125TC car which was initially developed for motorsport. And, at last, in 1981 there was a cabriolet developed by the same design studio, it differed from other Ritmo cars only in a folding roof.

Fiats Ritmo became the first Italian cars having the bumpers integrated in a body that originally caused rejection from consumers: visually it seemed that bumpers are absent at all.

In 1982 there was a minor facelifting of Fiat Ritmo. 4 front headlights were set on the cars. Back headlights got a new shape. Passenger compartment trimming was updated for Fiat Ritmo 105TC, the dashboard was transformed and the back spoiler changed.

Restyling of 1985 brought to Fiat Ritmo insignificant external changes. So, cars had new bumpers, door handles of a round shape were replaced by the rectangular ones, and plastic panels appeared on the doors.

On the markets of Canada, the USA and Great Britain Fiat Ritmo was sold under the name Fiat Strada, and the modified Fiat Ritmo Super version in Great Britain was known as Superstrada.
