Fiat X1/9 is a sporty car with a targa body and central location of the engine. It was released at the Turin plant Fiat from 1972 to 1982, then production was moved to the factory of Bertone firm and proceeded seven years.

In effect, the history of Fiat X1/9 began in 1969 when the presentation of the Autobianchi A112 Runabout concept car from a major body studio Bertone took place. Thus its owner Nuccio Bertone offered to the management of Fiat the co-operative project and showed to the partner prospects of the similar model. Having received consent from Fiat, designers of Bertone developed design of the new car with centrally located engine so it reminded some Porshe models by a targa body, two trunks (front and back) and rising headlights.

Bright appearance, dynamics, fine for those years, and reasonable price of a novelty were to the taste to the consumer, and Fiat X1/9 cars became an informal sport symbol of the 1970th.

The body shown enviable reliability by results of crash tests was produced at Bertone plant, then it was brought to Fiat plant, where the assembling of the car took place. The engine was located transversally under the only row of seats for economy of the place. The removed panel of a roof was set under the engine hood, the spare wheel was in the compartment behind a back of a passenger seat.

In 1982 the model was put under the absolute control of the Bertone company which made some changes in a sport car design: because of the replacement of the chassis, the space for legs of passengers was increased so the car became much more conveniently for tall people. The prevailing majority of these cars intended for the American market.

Production of Fiat X1/9 stopped in 1989 therefore the last cars of this model were released as special versions under the name Gran Finale.
