Citroën 2CVThe legendary car of the Citroën brand Citroën 2CV was released by the French company from 1949 to 1990. In total, five generations of the model were presented. For the 41-year history, this cabriolet underwent minimum changes. Nevertheless, cars were in great demand: in total 3 868 634 copies of Citroën 2CV were manufactured. Release of these cars was organized in France and Portugal.
Citroën 2CV 19491975The history of Citroën 2CV began in 1935 when the general manager of the Citroën company Pierre-Jules Boulanger decided to create the ordinary, efficient and reliable car accessible to lower-income strata of society. By the end of 1939 the prototype was created and was called Citroën TPV. The car differed in simplicity and asceticism: suspended hammocks were used instead of seats, the car could be started by the manual starter, and only one headlight was used for lighting of the road. The official debut of the model had to take place within the Parisian motor show, but because of the beginning of World War II the premiere had to be postponed.
The debut of Citroën 2CV took place at the Parisian motor show in 1948. According to the most conservative estimates, about one million people saw this car. The presented model considerably differed from a pre-war prototype: the car had top made of cloth, two headlights, an electric starter, two wipers and direction indicators. There were no classical seats. Instead of them the suspended benches consisting of metal tubes with tensed fabric were used. Internal panels of the car had no upholstery. To open a window, it was necessary to cast away its lower half and to fix it by a special clamp.
The car was subjected to severe criticism, and journalists called it "ugly duckling". But rather poor French people appreciated this car: the turn on this car lasted for three years. By 1975 three generations of the model were released.
Citroën 2CV was constantly improved: engine capacity was increased, disk brakes were set on the car. There were no great changes in the exterior. After 1954 the car had the trunk lid and extra windows. In 1960 the hood was decorated with six stamped figures.
On the basis of Citroën 2CV cabriolet, vans and pickups were produced. There was a four-wheel drive modification of Citroën 2CV Sahara with engines and two ignition switches.
Citroën 2CV IV generationRelease of the fourth generation took place in 1975-1979. The car had the updated bumper, square headlights instead of round ones and other minor changes. The was a limited release of Citroën 2CV Spot in 1976. From other cars it differed in a radiator grille, a spoiler on the roof and two-colour of body painting. To increase the interest in this model, the Citroën company began to organize rally. Everyone who got new Citroën 2CV with special tuning could participate in these competitions.
Citroën 2CV V generationRelease of cars of the fifth generation was organized from 1979 to 1991. In 1981 the model was used as James Bond's car in the movie "For Your Eyes Only" - the secret agent left persecutors on bright yellow Citroën 2CV. The special series differing from other cars in a bright colour, the inscription "007" on the front doors and stickers in the form of openings from bullets was released. By the end of the 1980th the car became outdated and in 1990 the model was taken out of production.
