Citro毛n AX was produced by the French company from 1986 to 1998. One generation of the model and one restyling were presented. The car was released in bodies of a three - and a five-door hatchback. In 1988 Citro毛n AX won the second place in the "European Car of Year" competition. Assembling of these cars was organized in Aulnay-sous-Bois, France.

Development of the model was conducted since 1983 with assistance of the French government. Creation of the most efficient car which would meet environmental standards was a main goal of the government ECO 2000 project.

The presentation of the first Citro毛n AX took place within the Parisian motor show in October, 1986. The car had aerodynamic indicators, excellent for that time. The low drag coefficient (Cx=0,31) was reached at the expense of a sloping hood and strongly inclined windshield. Door handles were drowned in the body, and the weight of the car equaled 700 kilograms. With such small weight, the car met all the safety requirements: steel of the increased durability was used in zones of programmable deformation.

The design of the car quite corresponded to that time. The emphasis was placed on simplicity and functionality. The passenger compartment differed in great organization of space: four people could accommodate in the car at its compact sizes. The driver seat provided high boarding. Seatbacks of a back row could be folded separately. There were many containers and units for small things in the passenger compartment.

In expensive package cars were equipped with the air conditioner, the ABS system and other options. For extra fee it was possible to establish cast disks and to order a leather inner trim.

In 1991 restyling of Citro毛n AX was carried out. Front and rear bumpers had rounded shape. Direction indicators in head lights became white. The branded logo was moved to the center of the hood. Minor changes concerned passenger compartment also: the dashboard was updated, quality of finishing materials was improved. In 1998 the model was out of production.

From 1996 to 2000 Citro毛n AX cars were released under the license at the Proton enterprise in Malaysia. The car was sold under the name Proton Tiara.
