Opel Diplomat

Opel Diplomat is the car of executive class produced from 1964 to 1977. It was a part of KAD family (Kapit盲n, Admiral, Diplomat), it was produced generally for the American market.

Model A

In 1964 Opel presented the so-called Big three of cars which succeeded Opel Kapit盲n P-LV. Opel Diplomat was the biggest and the most expensive car in the KAD series.

The four-door sedan was the first body of the model. There was also a limited release of a stylish coupe, it was produced from 1965 to 1967. This car had a modified front bumper and the extended back wings. The coupe was lighter than a sedan so the maximum speed of the car made 206 km/h. Also on the basis of a coupe an imposing cabriolet was manufactured.

Model A restyling

In September, 1967, all KAD cars underwent restyling therefore Opel Diplomat got new recirculating ball steering, dashboard and heating of a rear screen. Being a large car, Opel Diplomat became even longer after restyling, but the European consumers did not appreciate such innovation.

Model B

In 1969 there was the second generation of cars of KAD series. The body became shorter, the design of a front bumper was changed, and there were the chrome mouldings on the car body. These cars were classical representatives of General Motors models of those years.

Model B restyling

In 1971 Opel Diplomat, that already had the richest package in a series, began to be equipped with the hydraulic power steering, front fog lights and a tape recorder with the antenna built in the windscreen. The rear-view mirror had remote control. A bit later the radiator grille was transformed and the logo plate was moved from the left part of the grille to the centre.

Opel Diplomat was produced till 1977.
