Opel GT

The first car under the Opel GT name was produced in 1968. In five years of production at the plant in Bochum more than hundred thousand copies of Opel GT were released. In 1973 it was decided to terminate the release of this model. In 2007 under the name of Opel GT there was a new generation of sport cars which resembled the predecessor of the 1960-1970th years a little. Release of the second generation was carried out in the USA in the city of Wilmington till 2009.

Model 袉 generation

Opel GT model became stylistic experiment of the producer and strongly differed from usual products of the German producer. The company aimed to create the car for youth 鈥� sports, modern and inexpensive.

The model borrowed a set of elements from Opel Kadett B. The exterior of the car had many similarities to Chevrolet Corvette cars: Clare MacKichan, participating in creation of the majority of Chevrolet cars in the 1950th years, and Chuck Jordan, the developer of Chevrolet Camaro design from 1960th years, were engaged in design of the body.

The passenger compartment was very spacious and had four seats. It became possible thanks to a special way of design: at first the interior was developed, and the body was designed after it.

Producers paid special attention to headlights: they had the mechanical drive and were hidden until the light was switched on. The car was released in a coupe body, but by the special order it was possible to get a cabriolet.

Model 袉 generation restyling

In 1970 Opel GT was subjected to restyling. Changes concerned design and some technical characteristics. The updated model had the Opel GT/J index. It differed from other cars in existence of horizontal moldings, the updated disks, a velour inner trim and the new dashboard.

In 1973 production of this car was stopped. Nevertheless, the company planned to continue the release of Opel GT, and in 1975 Opel GT2 prototype was shown 鈥� an ultramodern sport coupe with the doors moving back and a streamline body. But because of the energy crisis, which has captured Europe, there was no stock production.

Model 袉袉 generation

In 2006 the German producer decided to revive a name of sports cars of the last century, popular among youth, having released a new roadster under the Opel GT name. The model debuted at the Geneva motor show in 2006. One year later the stock production started. The updated car had rear wheel drive and sports design, but those were the only features similar to the predecessor of Opel GT 袉. The car was released in a body of a roadster only.

In an exterior of the car there were a lot of nickel elements. The method of hydro formation, used at production of the body, made the exterior of a roadster unusual with combination of sharp straight lines and smooth outlines. There were stylistic air inlets, typical for sports cars of the middle of the last century, on the trunk lid. In an inner trim of some packages leather of black and red colours was used.

Despite reasonable price and quite good technical characteristics, the car did not enjoy special popularity in Europe therefore in 2009 production Opel GT 袉袉 was terminated.

Opel GT in the markets of the different countries

Opel GT was released under other names also. At the same plant in the USA Pontiac Solstice and Saturn Sky cars were produced 鈥� all three models were twins.
