Opel Speedster

Opel Speedster is a sports car in a targa body produced specially for the European and British markets. Later the affordable and stylish car began to be exported to Asia. The car was manufactured from 2000 to 2005 at the plant in Norfolk, Great Britain.

History of Opel Speedster creation

For the first time Opel Speedster Concept was presented at the automobile festival in Geneva in 1999. It went into stock production in 2000. The model was created on the basis of the second generation of Lotus Elise. Initially Opel Speedster aimed to be the Lotus Elise updating, but developers made it a separate model. Toyota engines, such as Toyota Celica had, were installed on the cars. The new car had the best component parts from different series of cars of brand.

The body which was completely manufactured of aluminium became the main feature of Opel Speedster cars. The metal base had weight only of 72 kg, and the curb weight of the car varied from 870 to 930 kg. At the time of release, it was the most lightweight car in the class. Besides, main elements of interior design were made of glass-reinforced plastic.

In 2002 at the auto show in Paris the Opel ECO Speedster concept car was presented. It could be accelerated to 250 km/h. Opel Easytronic trademark transmission was installed on the car.

Main elements of the body were made of carbon that provided improved aerodynamics and reduced car weight. The main changes in an exterior concerned nose of the car 鈥� it had more aggressive sports look. The main feature of the concept are gull wing doors, it became quite a hit with motorists. Developers planned to add diesel modification of ECO Speedster until the end of 2003, but the project was stopped because of technical incompatibility.

In 2003 Opel Speedster was tested in the "Top Gear" TV show and was nominated "The car of the year".

Production of the model continued till 2005.

Opel Speedster in the markets of the different countries

The Opel Speedster model was developed in two options of steering wheel arrangement: left and right, which considerably simplified its marketing in the countries with left-turning traffic.

In Great Britain the model was released under the name Vauxhall VX220. In Asia the car had the name of Daewoo Speedster because of cooperation with the import company.
