Hand riveters: what you need to know

A hand riveter is a special tool used for durable and reliable fastening of different car parts. It is often applied in the case when welding is either impossible or would take too much time and effort. Suitable for joining together different materials like metal and plastic or wood.

Operating principle

When the handles are squeezed, a special mechanism inside the riveter is triggered; it applies a tractive force to the fastener body or to the threaded mandrel inside the fastener. The rivet is deformed filling the inside cavity of the hole and the mandrel is either broken or unscrewed.

What are the types of hand riveters?

By design:

• Single-handed. Characterised by compact dimensions and a lightweight. Designed for fasteners with a diameter of 5 mm. They are comfortable to be operated with one hand. Often have a swivel head which makes working in hard-to-reach areas easier.
• Two-handed. Allow to develop a greater force. Involve using your both hands. Designed for fasteners with a diameter of up to 8 mm. Can be fitted with a plastic riveter mandrel collector. Suitable for professional use. They are not very good for working in recessed areas.

By intended purpose:

• For blind (pop) rivets. Their design features a collet with three splits to fix the rivet mandrel.
• For threaded fasteners. Have an internal thread for the attachment of a pin.

By the material of a rivet:

• For steel and copper items.
• For aluminium fasteners.
• For painted plastic accessories.

Tips on using hand rivets

Prior to installing a fastener, you should place all the components as close as possible to each other. You can do it with the help of the corresponding equipment such as pliers. The size of the drilled bore shouldn't be more than 0.2 mm larger than the size of the fastener. Otherwise, there is going to be a gap. Too small mounting holes are also undesirable as they cause uneven edges.

While attaching the fastener, you should squeeze the handles smoothly holding the riveter at right angles to the surface. This will help to extend the service life of the tool.

It is not allowed to overload the device using it for the installation of rivets of a too large diameter.
