Heat guns: what you need to know

Heat gun is intended for heating small areas of surfaces when doing various car repairs. In particular, the device is used for softening old paint before removing it, for drying fillers or other materials, blowing pipes, thermosetting plastic parts, disassembling units attached with glue, etc.

Operating principle

The body of the device is made, as a rule, of thermoplastic. Inside it, there is an electric motor with a fan which works at a high speed, and a spiral heating element. The motor blows air through the heating spiral, thanks to which the air is hot when it comes out.

What are the types of heat guns?

• Industrial heat guns. They are high-power (over 2,000 W) devices which can be used for a very long time without interruptions. The temperature of the airflow reaches 700掳C. These tools are often fitted with a range of additional functions: settings memory, overheating protection, the filtration of the incoming air, etc. The disadvantages of this equipment are a high price, heavy weight and considerable electricity consumption.

By design:

• Straight. They don鈥檛 have a handle, and are suitable for performing work in tight spaces.
• Pistol-grip. They are fitted with a handle which is at a right angle to the body. Comfortable to use for continuous work.
• Combined. These tools are equipped with a detachable or turning handle.

Tips on using heat guns

Read the manufacturer鈥檚 recommendations. Observe the safety precautions, in particular, put on protective goggles and gloves. Try to work outside or in well-ventilated areas. Do not use a heat gun next to flammable liquids and do not leave it unattended.

Avoid overheating the device. Choose the operation mode which is appropriate for the work you鈥檙e doing. Direct the air flow at an angle of 45掳 and make sure the air inlet grille on the gun body is not obstructed in any way. It is important to prevent dust and moisture from getting inside. This might have a negative effect on the service life of the device.

When the job is over, choose the lowest temperature mode and let the device work for two or three minutes. This will allow to prevent the premature wear of the heating element. Let the tool completely cool down before you put it away.
